How to Choose a Cremation Urn

Choosing a cremation urn or remembrance item is an important step of the cremation process. With all of the styles and materials available, it can sometimes be a little confusing as to which suits you or your loved one best. Whether choosing for yourself or choosing for a loved one, making the decision beforehand is one less thing to worry about.

Cremation Urns

Appearance of Urns

Urns come in a variety of appearances, simple colour variations, urn shapes and decorative inscriptions. When it comes to choosing, are you thinking about where it will be located? Does it blend in with other items, does it stand out, is it the right size. Do you care about appearance or are you choosing an urn to be eco-friendly? Affordability? These are the questions you should ask yourself.

When people think of an Urn, they think of the vase shaped urn on a mantlepiece. This is known as a full-size Urn which contains the cremation remains. Although this is typical, there are a variety of other options. You could choose a quaint wooden box or rectangular granite container.

Urn Materials

Here are some of the Urn materials for you to consider:

Stone Urns

Stone is probably the oldest type of material for an urn. This doesn’t mean they aren’t artistic and decorative. In fact, these are chosen by many due to their attractiveness. As an example, the Nicodemus series is shown in the images. They are highly decorative, durable and timeless. Some people like the use of stone as a material of the earth. Whatever your reasons, you won’t be disappointed in a stone Urn

Wood Urns

Wood urns can be plain and understated or warm and decorative. Variations in the type of wood used is what makes wood urns popular. These include Ash, Oak, Mahogany, Maple and more. Natural wood colours, density of grain and wood features make wooden urns naturally beautiful with a variation that matches everyone’s taste. This is another material that benefits from being eco-friendly. See some examples of wood urns below.

Metal Urns

Metals urns can be made of a variety of materials and have a variety of finishes to give an almost infinite amount of designs. For example, brass will give a gold/bronze colour effect with either a shiny finish or a satin finish. Paint over top in any colour, engrave or stamp the urn for additional decoration. Considering all the options means there are endless possibilities for metal urns. Metal like pewter and brass when compared to stone or wood, have their own unique qualities and can be lighter or heavier than the later options. Either way, a metal urn will last a lifetime.

Ceramic Urns

As ceramic is such a common and historically used material, ceramic urns can be highly decorative and are a very popular choice for many people due to the vast decorative options available. The downside of ceramic is that it is more fragile than some other urn materials but looks great in both plain and decorative finishes.
